DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A Dubai appeals court on Sunday upheld a one-month prison sentence for a British couple convicted of kissing in a restaurant.
The pair landed in court after an Emirati woman complained about the public kiss, which the couple insisted was just a peck on the cheek. They were arrested in November and convicted of inappropriate behavior and illegal drinking.
Cosmopolitan Dubai has the most relaxed social codes in the conservative Gulf, but authorities enforce strict decency laws and regularly crack down on people accused of pushing the limits, which can include everything from wearing a mini skirt to losing one's temper in traffic.
As recently as Sunday, though, a young Italian-Iranian couple could be seen kissing among the visitors to the 127th floor observation deck of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper.
Last month an Indian couple was sentenced to three months in jail for exchanging steamy text messages. In 2008, two Britons accused of having sex on the beach got three months in jail, though their sentences were later suspended.
Ayman Najafi and Charlotte Adams — both in their 20s — were arrested after an Emirati woman claimed they exchanged a passionate kiss in a restaurant where she and her daughter were having dinner.
Najafi and Adams attended Sunday's hearing, but did not speak. Their lawyer, Khalaf al-Hosany, told the court in a previous hearing that they kissed on the cheek as a greeting and "never intended to break the law."
Appeals court judge Iysar Fouad upheld the conviction, the jail time and a fine of 1,000 dirhams — about $270 — each. They will be deported after serving their sentences.
The couple has 30 days to appeal Sunday's ruling in a higher court.
Their lawyer said Najafi and Adams were not in a relationship, but knew each other before they met in Dubai.
Najafi worked for a marketing firm in Dubai and Adams was visiting the Muslim city-state with a Western outlook that has become famous for its beaches, ever-taller skyscrapers and anything-goes attitud

I've got an idea, if you don't like their culture, don't visit the country! You are ignorant if you think american policy and cultural values are to be enforced worldwide. Foreigners visit your land and abide by the laws, do you suppose you could do the same?

And the connection between a couple being sentenced for kissing and the suicide bombings in Afghanistane and Pakistan, for instance? Come on, you know the answer. ( 'religion' of 'peace' ).

Religions are just ideas, but they can be used to organize people. So a lot of bad things (e.g., wars and persecutions) have been carried out in the name of various religions, but the factions are really just competing for resources. That is called politics, by definition. That's why all political rallying cries sound like religions.

All the terrorism in the world, suicide bombings and stuff are due to blind American support for Israel. I know suicide bombings are wrong and Islam forbids from killing innocent people, but also try and open your eyes to the other side of the story......100,000's have been killed by Israel so far. Palestinians are treated like dirt, there medical supplies, food supplies are cut of and controlled at Israeli wishes and they cannot do anything......daily people are killed in palestine , even children but that is never reported in the news and one suicide bomber blows up in israel as compared to the 1000's killed is big news all over the world...

Knight, please do not bring the jews into this story. They have nothing to do with this story, so leave them out of it. No one is perfect, muslims have killed 100,000's also. Sadam alone killed more than that, so stop showing hate. I know israel is not perfect, but they have a right to exist, not be eradicated like a lot of muslims believe. I just ask Knight that you don't do one thing in Dubai. Kiss any one or it is jail time.

This is what comes from being a comparatively "new" religion. They've only been around since, what, the 8th century? It is interesting to note that they beleive God Almighty revealed everything to an illiterate man, Muhammad. Someone who was not capable of reading or writing it down. Not many religions throughout history have relied on the totally ignorant to spread their beliefs, or form their religion. Let's see, who else did that. Religion generally is the root of all this hate and murder. Until we as a human race outgrow this foolish worship of imaginary gods, we will be condemned to kill and hurt each other needlessly. I am talking about Christianity just as much as Islam. We must outgrow this childish and irrational belief in imaginary, omnipotent and psychic beings such as "God," stop insisting that we (and only we) know what he "wants," and allow ourselves to live in peace. The sooner we face this rality the better.

I think they're all a few sandwiches shy of a picnic. People who suffer from religious delusion are dumbasses. Also, if you don't want to go to jail for farting crossways, then don't f*cking go anywhere that does that kind of stuff to people. It's pathetic that places like this still exist in the year 2010. It's also pathetic that people are still stupid enough to base their entire existence on imaginary sky fairies and that they still do horrible things to one another because of it.
